Ag-Nav®2

The AG-NAV®2 (AG-NAV) is a DGPS navigation system designed by AG-NAV Inc. to meet the specific requirements of Agricultural and Forestry Aviation for crop spraying and forest protection. It provides the pilot with swath and directional guidance and other navigation information required carrying out precise aerial applications. The AG-NAV software provides all utilities to do everything from flight planning to data processing. With menu driven design, the AG-NAV system is very easy to use, yet full of features to suit any aerial spraying application.

The AG-NAV system is ideal for all levels of applications from simply spraying an AB line to make a rectangular area on-the-fly to precisely digitizing a complicated map to make a contour spray area, exclusion zones (no spray zones) and map background. It supports all spray patterns from simple back and forth to automatic center field split in various ways. The pilot can select to spray one area at a time or spray a cluster of areas together for better productivity.

No other system can make flight planning easier than AG-NAV. The pilot can fly directly to the field and make an area by spraying the AB line then get guidance to spray a whole area. If the exact shape of the field is required, the pilot can fly to the field and mark the boundary with a function key to define the spray area. Or with one known point around the area, AG-NAV can guide the pilot to fly to the field, generate a spray area and guide the pilot to evenly spray a whole field in a desired pattern. With a digital map file given by GIS personnel or a free map image provided from the internet, you can create spray areas in the office, copy them to a cheap floppy disk, then load them into the AG-NAV system and get ready to fly. Both DXF and Shapefile formats are supported. A raster map can be georeferenced to bring it into the real world coordinate system. If the coordinates of the corners of the spray area are given, you can type them in using the built-in editor and get the area ready for flight.

No matter how the area is generated, AG-NAV will automatically generate the flight lines to cover a whole area. It will analyze the shape of the area to find the best line heading for you. However for any reason, you can change the line heading any time and in any direction during the flight. Various spray patterns can be selected.

Highly accurate DGPS receivers are used with the AG-NAV system with position update at up to 10 Hz. Navigation guidance is provided based on the cross distance from the aircraft to the target swath and the angle of intercept. The navigation information is displayed on both the main screen and pilot steering bar (light bar). The sensitivity of the steering bars, both cross track and angle of intercept, can be programmed by defining the full scale for the bars or manually assigning a value to each light on the selected light bar.

All spray data and flight path are recorded to disk. If the AG-NAV is coupled with a flow monitoring or flow control system, the flow data is recorded too. Recording rate is selectable for spray on and spray off. AG-NAV can be programmed to record the flight path from take-off to landing. All flight information (spray pattern, target swath, left-off points, etc...) is remembered for use in the next flight.

AG-NAV provides all utilities for the pilot to handle the data. When the flight or application is finished, the pilot can transfer all area, spray and flight data to a floppy disk. With the free software supplied for office use or NavviewW, the data on the floppy disk can be downloaded into a desktop or laptop computer. A GIS expert may offer good help for data processing but if this is a luxury, you or your wife (or husband) can do this without any problem. In a comfortable office, you can replay the spray data and flight path, overlay it on a topo map if any, make a short note for the print-out, and print the area, spray data and map on paper at the desired scale. The print-out can be used as a report for your work done or kept in archive for business information. You can convert the AG-NAV data into the required GIS format. This can be used in another GIS software as a layer of data for crop or forest analysis.

The hardware configuration of the AG-NAV®2 consists of a compact intelligent Moving Map Display with keypad, a choice of lightbars (steering indicators) to suit the application and type of aircraft, and a stand alone DGPS receiver system. The AG-NAV®2 system is used with a variety of DGPS receivers incorporating differential corrections from L-Band satellite signals (Omnistar or Landstar), Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS free satellite differential signals from the U.S. government), and Coast Guard beacon network (also free differential signals).

The AG-NAV system is designed for versatile usage, besides crop and forest spraying, many other applications can be done by using the same hardware and software or modified software in some cases. The AG-NAV software has been developed and constantly improved to meet AG-NAV clients’ applications, requirements of a contract, or even to help pilots who are experienced with another guidance system and now want to use AG-NAV. AG-NAV Inc. greatly appreciate the pioneer clients, all clients, government agencies and universities who never stop supporting AG-NAV. Never hesitate to volunteer to test the AG-NAV software and kindly help with useful feedback.
