The TraxNav system is a DGPS navigation system designed by AG-NAV Inc. for animal baiting, counting and tracking applications. The TraxNav software provides you all utilities to do everything from flight planning to data processing. With menu driven design, the TraxNav system is very easy to use, yet full of features to fulfill the tracking and monitoring of animals on the ground.

With the TraxNav system, you can make a survey area by flying to the field and mark the boundary of the area or digitizing a digital map. The digital map can be in the AutoCad (DXF), Shapefile (SHP) or bitmap (BMP) format. When the area is created, TraxNav will automatically generate the flight lines to cover a whole area. It will analyze the shape of the area to find the best line heading for you. At any time, you can change the line heading by entering the desired heading or flying the right direction and pressing a function key designated for line direction change. The target (bait drop) points are automatically calculated based on the defined distance between points, saved and displayed on the screen. If the pre-flight plan is done in office, you can copy the data to a floppy disk or USB stick and transfer it to the TraxNav system in the aircraft. All setup is done for a new flight.

For animal tracking, you can make a list of animals that you want to track. During flight when you find the animals, with a key press, TraxNav will bring up the list of animals for you to select the type and quantity of animal found. All data will be recorded for replay or flying back to the tracked points.

Highly accurate DGPS system is used with the TraxNav system with position update at up to 10 Hz. Navigation guidance is provided based on the cross distance from the aircraft to the target line and the angle of intercept. The navigation information is displayed on both the main screen and pilot steering bar (light bar or pilot indicator). The main screen also shows the survey area, exclusion zones, flight lines, target points, bait dropped points, and aircraft with flight path.

During the mission, if a special event takes place, with a key press TraxNav will prompt you to write a short note. The note or comment will be permanently recorded to disk with the GPS position where the event happens, date and time stamp. The event information is also immediately displayed on the screen for emergency report to the base station for proper action decision. At all time, flight path is recorded to disk. Recording rate is selectable from 0.2 to 5.0Hz. If baits must be dropped in a control area for animal vaccination, TraxNav can be coupled with a bait dispensing system to automatically dispense a bait at a desired target point. When the aircraft is closest to the target point, TraxNav will send a signal to trigger the dispenser. The dispenser manages to drop a bait and sends a signal back to TraxNav. TraxNav then counts the bait drops, calculates the position of the dropped point and saves the data with date and time stamp. Everything is done automatically. At any time, you can overwrite the automatic mechanism with manual. You can trigger the bait dispenser manually and whenever a bait is dropped, the data will be calculated and recorded. If the mission is partially done, all flight information (area, target line, left-off points, etc...) is remembered for use in the next flight.

TraxNav provides all utilities for you to handle data. When the flight or mission is finished, you can transfer all area, events, tracked points, bait drops and flight path data to a floppy or USB disk. With the free software supplied for office use or TraxView, the data can be transfered to a desktop or laptop computer. With TraxView, you can replay the flight path, review the bait drops and tracked points, overlay them on a topo map if any, make a short note for the print-out, and print the data out on paper at the desired scale. The print-out can be used as a report for your work done or kept in archive for business information. If required, you can convert the TraxNav data format into DXF or Shapefile format. The output file (DXF or SHP) can be used in another GIS software as a layer of data for animal monitoring and analysis.

The hardware configuration of the TraxNav system consists of a compact intelligent color Moving Map Display with keypad, a choice of lightbars (steering indicators) to suit the application and type of aircraft, and a stand alone DGPS receiver system. The TraxNav system is used with a variety of DGPS receivers incorporating the differential corrections from L-Band satellite signals (Omnistar or Landstar), Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS free satellite differential signals from the U.S. government), and Coast Guard beacon network (also free differential signals).

The TraxNav system is designed for versatile usage, besides animal tracking and monitoring, many other applications can be done by using the same hardware and software or modified software in some cases.
